Cleanup Becomes a Sport
CleanPic turns community cleanup into a fun, team-based competition. Created in Okinawa by environmentalist Koji Kinjo, teams work against the clock to collect litter, sort what they find, and earn points while making a real difference in the community.
Making its San Diego debut at the Yokohama Festival, CleanPic brings together students, volunteers, and community organizations at Balboa Park while creating a new environmental connection between Okinawa, San Diego, and Yokohama.
Then the three-image row is perfect for explaining the actual competition. I would use the Okinawa action photos you uploaded, especially kids collecting → adults hauling something ridiculous like the giant tire → team/group celebration. That visually tells the whole story.
How CleanPic Works
CleanPic makes environmental action competitive, collaborative, and fun. Participants form teams, receive their cleanup supplies and instructions, and head into designated areas of Balboa Park to collect litter before time runs out.

The Rules of the Game
Stay within your designated cleanup area. Follow the clock. Sort collected materials correctly. Never handle hazardous, sharp, medical, or otherwise unsafe materials. Most importantly, respect Balboa Park, fellow participants, and the community around you.
Scoring values and San Diego-specific competition rules will be announced before the event. Rules may be adjusted to reflect the conditions and environment of Balboa Park.

CleanPic transforms community cleanup into a sport. Teams collect litter within a designated competition area, sort what they find, and earn points based on the type and weight of the materials collected.
The team with the highest total score wins.
01 | COMPETITION TIME: 53 MINUTES
Teams have 53 minutes to collect and sort litter within the designated competition area.
02 | TEAMS: UP TO 5 PARTICIPANTS
CleanPic is designed around five-person teams.
03 | COLLECT, SORT & SCORE
Teams collect litter and bring it to the designated sorting area. Materials are separated into the required categories, weighed, and converted into points using the official scoring table.
04 | STAY WITHIN THE COURSE
All collection must take place within the designated competition boundaries. Specific boundaries will be explained before the competition begins.
05 | FINISH BEFORE TIME EXPIRES
Only litter properly returned and sorted before the end of competition time is eligible for scoring. When the competition ends, teams must stop collecting immediately.
06 | WATCH THE FLAGS
A green flag signals the start. A yellow flag signals five minutes remaining. A red flag signals the end of competition.
07 | SAFETY & FAIR PLAY
Participants must follow event staff instructions and use appropriate collection equipment. Hazardous or unsafe materials should not be handled directly.
